Massive GOP Voter Suppression Effort In New Jersey

by: Juan Melli

Mon Nov 06, 2006 at 12:37:25 AM EST

Sources in Bergen County are reporting that an autodial robocall is being made that starts out sounding like a positive Bob Menendez message. If you hang up, it repeatedly calls you back. If you listen all the way to the end, it finishes by saying that Menendez is an embezzler and under criminal investigation.

This is a voter suppression tactic being used nationwide by the GOP. Initially callers will think they are hearing a call from the Menendez campaign asking for support. If they hang up, it will repeatedly call them back. The intention is to annoy the voter so much that they no longer support the candidate. For those who actually listen to the entire call, they are presented with a series of lies and smears against Menendez, also with the intention of suppressing turnout. It's a win-win tactic for them.

The NRCC is doing the same exact thing in Pennsylvania, New Hampshire and at least 53 other races across the country.

If you receive one of these calls, call the DNC's voter protection hotline at 1-888-DEM-VOTE and record a testimonial, which will be the foundation for any legal action. Let us know about it in the comments, too. If possible, try to record it. Here's some expert advice for what to do.

for the Democratic party.  This is a tactic that every ordinary person in the country will despise.  So, can they get this story into the media?  Can they prosecute the people doing this?  And finally, why not outlaw robocalls, since they only benefit bad corporations and Republicans?  Let them hire a minimum wage worker to make their calls.

from Ohio was push polled, probably as part of this operation.

I really hope this catches on in the Monday news cycle.

Swift Boating (0.00 / 0)

There is a horribly bland (read biased) article in today's NYT about robocalling.

I love the fact that one of the founders of the private Ohio group's name is Swift.

Good reporting Juan and good link to Kos.

The sad part is that it's almost too late to reach voters who think that many of these harassing calls are from our side

Question (0.00 / 0)
I've been sort of following it at TPM and just went over there.

Interesting discussion of Federal v State laws on Do Not Call.  The state was New Hampshire.

I have Fed DNCall but not state.

What is the Jersey law?

The question is never whether, but how republicans will seek to suppress voting. What a disgrace.

Ocean County Calls (0.00 / 0)
I was at my father's home in southern Ocean county this weekend -- normally a very Republican area (though ol' Dad himself is ready to spit every time he hears W's name).

Anyway, we received at least five calls, one Saturday, four Sunday, four of which clearl said they were from the Kean campaign -- and immediately also said that WNBC-TV in New York was reporting that Sen Menendez was under investigation by the FBI.

Funny, I kept checking, but not one news outlet -- not even FOX -- was repeating that scoop on air.

The fifth apparently was from Menendez, but now I'm wondering if it wasn't another Kean smear message. My stepmother listened to that one, so I'm not sure what all it said.

The calls were turning up on our caller ID as originating in Wyoming.

WHAT'S INTERESTING is the wasting of resources in an area that's so Republican it's not even funny. Maybe the much-vaunted Republican campaign machine doesn't know how to correlate exchanges with the towns they serve, but heck, that infomation IS listed in the front of the phone book ... so the logical conclusion, at least for me, is that Kean's people are serious worried about their chances in souther Ocean county.

And, if that's the case, is there anywhere in NJ that's safe for Jr.?

the story is old (0.00 / 0)
That they're saying is misleading.  WNBC is one that reported (illegal, of course) leaks from the Republican investigation back in September (or was it August?).  Nothing has come from it, probably because everything was legal and reported at the time.

robocalls are illegal, so the Republicans had to hire cheap.  Here's what happened:
