All New Jersey Republicans vote to privatize Medicare

by: Hopeful

Fri Apr 15, 2011 at 03:47:15 PM EDT

The Ryan plan aims to abolish Medicare as we know it and replace it with a privatized voucher system. Pollsters tell us the American people hate the idea:

The Republican deficit reduction plan does not even win majority support, but when voters learn almost anything about it, they turn sharply and intensely against it.  They have particularly grave concerns about the plan to end Medicare and slash Medicaid spending, pushing seniors into the private insurance market and costing them thousands of dollars more in out-of-pocket expenses.

Today, every New Jersey Republican voted for the plan: Frank LoBiondo, Scott Garrett, Jon Runyan, Chris Smith, Rodney Frelinghuysen, and Leonard Lance all have now tried to end Medicare.

every Democrat voted no (4.00 / 1)
Not just from New Jersey, but from the whole country.

This Insanely Outrageous Extremism Is A Golden Opportunity (4.00 / 1)
If Democrats are willing to call their bluff...that means making the 2012 election a referendum on THIS vote!

Here's an interesting and hopeful take from Thom Hartmann....

Now is the time (0.00 / 0)
to identify candidates.  Senator Van Drew, if not now, when?  Some districts will still be tough but our goal should be three pick-ups.

This is erasing Medicare (0.00 / 0)
not "privatizing" it.

Medicare, with its 1000s of employees, contracts negotiated with hospitals, clinics, & pharmacies, would be gone.

Further, one of the  big competitors to local insurance monopolies would disappear. The reduction in competition would lead to and ever more egregious rate hikes.

Just because Republicans slap the "Medicare" label on it doesn't make it Medicare.

PLEASE do not call this hideous voucher system "Medicare". It isn't.
