What is he waiting for?

by: Jason Springer

The Governor is still driving around the state to assess the damage from the snow storm and said yesterday he wanted to see more before deciding whether to declare a state of emergency. This is his latest tweet:
Just met with Atlantic County officials and surveyed storm damage. Over 2 feet of snow. Now on to Cape May County.
Ok, over 2 feet of snow. Maybe you need to see more:
Christie said he had also been in touch with Atlantic City Electric and discussed efforts to help restore power to the more than 50,000 customers in the region still without electricity.
That's down from 90,000 people who had power out at some point, but still a large amount of people in the dark and cold for over a day. Rob Andrews called on the Governor to declare a state of emergency yesterday when he was in Camden County seeing first hand they had received over 2 feet of snow:
"As the snow persists, the cost of plowing, cleaning and protecting our neighborhoods continues to mount," Andrews said in a statement. "With more and more families out of work and struggling to make ends meet, taxpayers cannont afford to pay the costs resulting from another blizzard -- emergency assistance will save money for taxpayers and decrease the burden on overstretched local budgets."
This is what the Governor's association says about assistance on just snow removal if you make a emergency declaration:
Other circumstances, such as heavy snowfall over an extended period of time, severe winds and extraordinary drifting, extraordinary ice formations, and the cumulative effect of snow on the ground may warrant assistance even if the snow depth does not exceed record snowfall levels. Snow removal assistance will be provided for a 48-hour period to address the most critical emergency needs.
This isn't just a partisan question. The Republican Governor of Virginia and Democratic Governors of Delaware, Maryland and Pennsylvania have already declared a state of emergency. Parts of New Jersey, which the Governor has already seen, arguably got hit just as bad if not worse than some of those areas. Some counties made the declaration on their own. What is the Governor waiting for? It's not like he has to stop touring the state once he makes the declaration. If over 2 feet of snow and over 50,000 without power the day after isn't an emergency, what is?

State of Emergency (4.00 / 1)
County of Cape May declared yesterday. 3 counties have/have had travel restrictions; Atlantic, Ocean & Camden.

But we also have whole chunks of the state that got nothing. Maryland is having trouble coping with the volume of snow. Not sure about VA, DE & PA but they're all in the belt that only part of NJ was in this weekend. I'm not sure it's bad that they're still evaluating.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

Disagree (4.00 / 1)
Ya'll got me with your zinger about Christie driving around the state (hopefully by a driver).

But I do worry about folks in S. Jersey with no heat or electricity.  Have to be evacuated to "warming centers?"  Who clears the streets - all 2 feet of them?  Who shovels the sidewalks of the elderly or incapacitated?  Surely, it's OK to have kids make money, but not if people can't afford it.

Sorry, he's just a cheap b'tard.

Wrong (3.25 / 4)
Why should it matter that the storm was confined for the most part to South Jersey? Do you think Christie would have been so slow to react if this hit his turf in North Jersey? South Jerseyans have complained for years about the neglect we get from the State but at least the past Dem governors didn't leave us to fend for ourselves in major emergencies.

Not all of PA got this storm, I don't believe all of VA did either. It should be necessary for an entire state to get hit before the Governor responds. It also shouldn't be necessary for North Jersey to be hit before the idiots up there start to care.

Rather "It shouldn't be necessary for an entire state to get hit before the Governor responds."

Oh, the humanity! (0.00 / 0)
The governor needs a personal tour to determine if it's a disaster? Is he REALLY THAT F**** STUPID? Or is his TV broken?

If you don't know when you're being spun, you deserve the goernment you get.

It's the Bush way n/t (4.00 / 1)

To hell with what she wants, let's make Rosi Efthim the next DSC chair.

What's he waiting for? (0.00 / 0)
Probably wants to make sure his favorite restaurants are forced to close before he declares an emergency.

I wonder how many times he stopped to eat while he was touring the state.

As long as the Drakes Bakery in Wayne, NJ can get their delivery trucks on the road I don't think he'll declare an emergency.

Cape May County voted for Christie (0.00 / 0)
Now they are seeing what they have voted for.  I hope that they are satisfied with the result or perhaps they are having buyers remorse about a Governor too egotistic to take the word of his Emergency Management people that the situation is bad in South Jersey.

last time (0.00 / 0)
we didn't know who was actually in charge of the state.  this time we know who's in charge, and he won't make the necessary call.  Snow Tuesday night into Wednesday is gonna be falling on top of what is left of this storm.  can we get a break yet?

Emergency and Disaster Declarations (0.00 / 0)
I have always felt that these declarations were overused. There should probably be multiple levels of "emergencies" to declare, if there aren't already. They should have well defined "triggers" that do not rely on governors to make personal decisions.

2 feet of snow is bad, but it is something that we should generally expect to occur once or twice a year. We should be well within any reasonable snow removal budget for the year.
